Thali is an Indian tradition that involves a selection of different dishes served in small individual round bowls and delivered to the table on a large round tray. A typical thali consists of 2 exotic sweets, 4 types of vegetables, 3 farsans, 4 different rotis and dal rice. At Golden Star the thali is unlimited and the portions overgenerous, so make sure you arrive on an empty stomach. Perhaps even embark on a 24 hour fast before a trip to Golden Star Thali, so that you have enough space to be able to sample every dish on the tray.

Golden Star has created a unique blend of spicy and dry delicacies originating from Rajasthan, and sweet delicacies from Gujarat. As a result guests are provided with the perfect mix of wholesome and tasty fare. The thali at this particular restaurant offers the native cuisine from the Gujarati and Rajasthani regions. Under the skillful supervision of Hemji Maharaj, the kitchen prepares each delicacy carefully and exquisitely, flavored with just the right spices.

Each meal starts off with a selection of salads and is accompanied by a side order of chutneys and pickles. At Golden Star, different days of the week offer different sweets, such as malpua rabdi on Wednesdays, or desi ghee jelebis on Fridays. There are four vegetable dishes to choose from, including cottage cheese, lentils, potatoes and greens, whilst there are three varieties of farsans available, one chat, one steamed and one fried. A variety of traditional breads and rice-based dishes are laid before you on the table, such as jowar rotlas and masala khichdi.
All this, and complimentary bottled mineral water...it is no surprise that many frequenters to the restaurant suggest only sampling the many dishes in small amounts so that you don't miss out on anything.
There is not much that one of the 30 waiters will not do for you at Golden Star. Each waiter, or 'maharaj' as they prefer to be called, wears traditional Rajasthani clothes, including a turban. The service is friendly, efficient and impeccably fast. It is a challenge to say 'no' when they keep bringing more and more food to your table. The staff share in the chef's passion for food and their country, and this is reflected in their positive attitudes. This passion is projected onto the customers, making an experience at Golden Star Thali a unique one to remember.
The interior is cozy, intimate and charming with a small seating capacity of 55 people. The simple decoration allows for the emphasis to remain on the scrumptious vegetarian food. The wooden chairs and tables create a relaxed and rustic atmosphere, which along with the dressed up staff enhances the cultural and exotic feel of the restaurant. It is advised that you make reservations, particularly over weekends, as the small restaurant fills up quickly often with big families or large parties. Fortunately the venue is air conditioned for those hot Indian summer nights. An upstairs room is also available for dining, and is particularly useful for private functions and parties.
During the year several food festivals are celebrated at Golden Star. During January and February there is the Gujarat and Rajasthan Rasoi Utsav. Serving unlimited farsans, sweets and other delicacies this festival showcases the very best cuisine originating from these regions. April and May brings Pure Gold to Golden Star and in particular Aamras, the main delicacy at this festival. The festival offers visitors the chance to sample the richest and freshest fruits of the religion.
Made on site from the purest variety of mango in the world, Alphonso mangoes, Aamras draws people from all over to come and relish in its sweet exotic flavor. It is served complimentary on weekdays, and for those real Gujju thali lovers, unlimited on Sundays. The month of July celebrates the skill and creations of Chef Maharaj. As one of India's most experienced and well-known Gujarati and Rajasthani chefs, Maharaj boasts over 30 years of culinary experience. The ongoing food festival serves unlimited amounts of the 72-year old man's specialties, such as Mewa Lapsi, Rajwadi Batata and provides the perfect opportunity for fans to sample his many delights.
Rajasthani food creates a perfect blend of good tastes, exotic flavors and Indian heritage and tradition. If it is ethnic Gujarati or Rajasthani food that you are looking for, then look no further. Golden Star is a successful thali restaurant largely because it sticks to what it does best and doesn't try to be too adventurous. It is a family-owned restaurant that is accessible, convenient and above all, great value for money. It truly deserves its label as a specialist in thalis. And for those who are too lazy to leave the house for such delight, the restaurant offers a home delivery service.
