Khyber At Fort is a popular choice for both locals and many tourists visiting Bombay. Located in a busy street in the city within close proximity to a number of tourist attractions, it is highly recommended by a number of guidebooks. Open daily for lunch and dinner, 12:30-3:30 and 7:30-11:30 respectively, it is in an ideal location for visitors to end off a long day of sightseeing with a delicious traditional Indian meal. The restaurant is named after the Himalayan mountain pass between Afghanistan and northwestern India. The interior is designed to reflect the rustic Frontier theme common in this region with low wooden rafters and carved stone pillars, along with the waiters dressed in traditional Frontier-style attire.
Step through the grand wooden doors into the marble entrance and you are immediately seduced by the strong aromas and flavors that fill the air in Khyber. Notice the intricate carvings of traditional Urdu poetry on the restaurant doors, which immediately creates a mystifying atmosphere. Filled with Indian heritage and culture, from the flickering oil lanterns to the subtle classical Indian music of Thumris and ghazals playing in the background, Khyber At Fort has the perfect ambiance for a romantic dinner or just an enjoyable traditional Indian evening.

Khyber's interior makes for a majestic evening. It is a unique venue steeped in charm and history with delicate stone carvings and original paintings from India's top artists displayed on the walls. The marble floors and the tropical vegetation dotted around the restaurant all help to make Khyber the opulent and sophisticated restaurant that it is. It is no surprise that it has a reputation for being a royal dining experience.
Due to the restaurants popularity it is definitely advised you make reservations. However, bookings are only guaranteed before 8:30 or after 10:15. Guests are met immediately upon arrival in the entrance hall and led by the friendly service to a table of your choice. Whether guests are seated upstairs or downstairs they are guaranteed maximum privacy. For those wanting something a bit more intimate or romantic, ask for a table in the Anjolie Ela Menon Room named after one of India's top contemporary female artists. Menon's original oil paintings which line the walls create a dreamy atmosphere with their soft colors and fresh textures.
The Indian cuisine on offer is authentic and made from only the freshest ingredients. It is sure to ignite your senses and tempt your taste buds. The food at Khyber, inspired by the northern and more royal territory of India, has won multiple awards for best restaurant Indian cuisine. The leather bound menu comprises conventional dishes served in India, such as tandoori chicken, naan, samoosas, chicken tikka masala, paneer and pakora. Each dish is rich and flavorsome and uses a diverse array of spices. There is also a variety of less conventional dishes on offer, for the more adventurous. Try the spice pumpkin shorba, the tangdi kebeb or the prawns rehmi.
Khyber At Fort also boasts excellent banqueting facilities that can accommodate for any occasion, hosting between 60 and 300 people. For romantic wedding receptions and intimate dinners, the sparkling chandeliers create a fantastic fairytale atmosphere. The cream marble floors on the other hand lend themselves to a clean, chic environment for a more formal business seminar or conference. Different occasions can be tailor-made to suit the guest's individual needs, and this includes compiling one's own menu. Khyber offers a wide variety of gourmet meals and deserts, as well as an extensive range of wines and cocktails, so guests are truly spoilt for choice.
If you're in the mood for one more relaxing drink after dinner or for a big night out on the town, be sure to head upstairs to Red Light, the place to be in Bombay after sunset. Open from 6:30 to 4am this newly renovated nightclub is located directly above Khyber. The red and black leather interiors create a mysterious and dusky atmosphere, which is offset by the numerous mirrors that sparkle and glitz when caught in the light. As one of Bombay's trendiest and most popular party spots, Red Light caters for all sorts of moods. Drink in the bars, chill in the lounges or get down on the dance floor.
If you want to experience a piece of Bombay's nightlife, mix with local people, feast on quality food and wine and listen to some quality beats and sounds, then plan a night at Red Light. |
Khyber At Fort is located in the southern region of Bombay. To the north one can find Khyber at Khar, a second branch of the Khyber restaurants. Here one can find the same menu and banqueting facilities as at Fort, but a different design and decor. The interior is more modern, with plush seating and vibrant colors. The sleek contemporary lines are softened by the numerous candle-looking lights and the Indian atmosphere is enhanced further by the subtle music playing in the background.
Dining at Khyber is a memorable experience and one that should not be rushed. Be sure to take time to appreciate each and every taste and flavor and relax whilst listening to the music. The meats are tender and juicy and the vegetables fresh. Admire the paintings and the sculptures, breathe in the exotic aromas and immerse yourself in the authentic Indian culture that Khyber represents.
